BAKUC OLD MEN Group Build

I sure hope Gunpla modellers has not forgotten about us ( me! ).

Old friends from way back the Bakuc 2008 competition at Hong Kong had a chat at Facebook recently, and we decided to set up a sort of Group Build for OLD times sake.

We'll call the Group Build... OLD MEN GB! We've decided to use any Perfect Grade for the GB. The kit is not yet final though but the participants are. The participants of the GB are Matt Tomczek of the US, Raymond Loke ( Rayloke ) of Malaysia, Omar Zampetti ( Aor_or_die ) of Italy and yours truly ( of the Philippines ).

This GB should be fun! It should help us ( most specially me ) to bring back the passion in building plastic kits! I am currently setting up my new workstation at the new house and will buy supplies very soon. Hope that the workstation will be up by mid April, so that I could work on some pending commission projects.

AOR_OR_DIE of Italy is now in the Philippines!

Omar aka Aor_or_die of Italy and of  Gundam Dreams arrived in the Philippines a couple of days ago, and I together with a handful of MAC people met with him yesterday.

I met Omar back in BAKUC 2008 in Hong Kong and has always been sharing notes and works since then. It is super nice to see a friend in person that came from a very distant place ( 20 hours of travel from Italy to the Philippines ). I was very excited to see him since I posted this post and his masterpieces a while back, but I honestly could not describe the great feeling of seeing him in person once again.

It was also sooooooooooooo inspiring to see Omar's " MONSTERPIECE "of a kit! It is nice to see his PMS-007 Jaguar as it slowly comes to life in his website ( Gundam Dreams ), BUT it is breath taking to see all those scratch built pieces in person! Omar has outdone himself and is about to come up with the badest " monsterpiece " / Monster Grade to date!

This hobby has been so fun for the past 4 years and meeting other ( international and local ) modelers and making great friends is truly what any hobby is ALL ABOUT!

I totally enjoyed 9 hours of chatting with Omar and his friend Anar. I hope they enjoy the rest of their stay here in the Philippines, as they swim inside the crater of a volcano ( Mt. Pinatubo ) and swim with the Butandings ( Whale Sharks ) in Palawan! I also hope Omar gets to see a Tarsier as he told me he loves monkeys very much ( lol ).

A ton of THANK YOUs to both Omar and Anar for all the food and beers yesterday! And super thanks for my first resin kit and my daughter's HG Gaddes kit! Another great Gunpla experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life ( great stuff ).

my daughter is joining Gunpla Builders World Cup!

A couple of days ago I was talking to a Gunpla friend in the phone and I was bitchin' about the rules of the expert special OOTB category of the GBWC Philippines 2011. Me and my 3 kids were on a mall waiting for both a toolbox23.com customer and my wife. When all of a sudden my eldest 8 year old daughter Nico asked me if she could join the contest for the first time this year.

She has painted ONE first grade Force Impulse Gundam before, and I am pretty sure she will do a little better this time around. She used some cheap Reeves acrylics on her first Gunpla, and I'll lend her some Vallejo paints for hand painting her entry this time.

I'll share to you our little conversation...


Nico: Dad could you get me a small Gundam? coz I want to join the contest this time.

me: Really? why? what kit ? what colors would you paint it? What's your concept?

Nico: I want to paint it Black and Orange and maybe hand paint some Hello Kitty faces.

me: Hmmm, it should have girly colors... black and orange does not really fit you. I have a damaged SD kit ( SD Dendrobium ) in the house. I'll show you later.

Nico: okay, I will paint it pink, white and red then and I want to paint Hello Kitty faces to the kit.

me: I have a kit with a vehicle, if you like you could add rust to the vehicle and make it look that the Gundam is repairing her car. I'll teach you how to add rust and damages.

Nico: No dad, I want the vehicle clean with Hello Kitty painting all over it. I want it white and clean parked in a Garden full of grass and small flowers.

me: So if you want it clean you should use spray cans at least for the vehicle and instead of painting the Hello Kitty faces to the kit, I will buy you some Hello Kitty stickers instead.

Nico: Okay, but I want to hand paint the Gundam.

me: Okay, I'll show you your kit when we get home, but are you joining to win or just to have fun? coz you will be up against 14 year old kids?

Nico: Just joining for fun dad.

Actually the conversation was a bit longer, but that is the gist. So my daughter wants her entry clean and not battle damaged or weathered. She also wants it hand painted but I will insist on the cans at least for the dendrobium. And she wants a diorama and she'll only join just for fun.

So after the conversation with my daughter, I thought I'd JOIN FOR FUN for the first time. Honestly as arrogant as it my sound, I always join to try to win. And my daughter made me realize that we could actually join for fun this time around. Besides my category does not allow dioramas and modifications, so it is just a fun category after all. Nothing serious about it.

Ironic though as my 8 year old daughter is going to compete with 14 year olds, me on the other hand is going to compete with 15 year olds which are more than half my age. lol

GBWC Philippines 2011 "Official Rules"

The "official" rules and regulations of the up and coming Gunpla Builders World Cup 2011 Philippines, is now finally released! Gunpla Builders World Cup formerly known as Bandai Model Kit World Cup, Bandai Action Kit Universal Cup and Bandai Action Kit Asian Cup is the "only official" Bandai Gundam model kit competition for the international Gunpla community.

It has been renamed numerous times already since it's inception back in 2003, but has retained the system of getting the "top new modelers"  of each of the participating countries and compete with each other at the world championships at HongKong.

I am personally not really sure if I could join this year as unlike last year where I entered and won with my " Gilgamesh Project" in the expert category. This year they would only allow me to join in the OOTB special category which does not allow modifications, custom decals and dioramas or custom bases. However I am sure to cover this event and share with you all the happenings, joining or not.

Anyways here are now the OFFICIAL RULES from BANKEE that they just finally released.

I won't be joining Gunpla Builders World Cup 2011.

A couple of guys texted me today and informed me that the ( draft ) rules and regulations of the upcoming Gunpla Builders World Cup 2011 is up, and it does not have an expert category. So I thought maybe our local organizers here in the Philippines followed the other countries at last. And removed the expert category, thus allowing everyone to join the open category again.

However after reading and inspecting the rules, I realized that they just changed the expert category to special category. Which is the perfect name for the category as they would only allow OOTB entries. Base on the rules, past 3 time winners are only allowed to join the OOTB special category.

I called the organizers but they could not give me an answer if they have removed the 3 time win rule and would allow the expert old winners to join the fun in the open category this year.

So I guess my MG The O II won't be showing up in the Gunpla Builders World Cup Philippines 2011. I am also not sure if I would want to rush a master grade or even a perfect grade and showcase my basic skills in the OOTB special category. So I guess If there won't be changes in the rules this year... I won't be joining the Bandai Gunpla Builders World Cup.

Oh well, the contest is made for people half my age anyways.

I am still pretty pumped up to finish my MG The O face-off with Kenny ( Toymaker ) though. So even though I won't be joining GBWC this year... I will still finish this behemoth of a build.

BAKUC finals 2008 Flashback!

My previous post of Gundam Expo 2010 HK that I got from GG made me itchy to post this 2 year old photos of my experience at the same event back in 2008. It is really fun and nostalgic to see these old photos as I never posted them here in my blog before. I only started blogging last year ( November 2009 ) thus these are new old photos in my blog.

Obviously Bandai Model Kit World Cup ( BMKWC ) was called Bandai Action Kit Universal Cup ( BAKUC ) back in 2008. Much to my surprise back then, BAKUC was not the main event... It is the final event though, but it is only part of their annual Gundam Expo.

The Graveyard - 1/100 Gundam diorama magtype wallpaper

With still an hour to burn in the office, I thought of creating a quick magazine type wallpaper of my " The Graveyard " diorama. This Gundam diorama features 2 1/100 HG and 2 1/100 MG Gundam model kits from the Gundam Seed series.

This Gundam diorama remains to be my most extensive build so far and I could not fathom how many hours I dedicated to this build just to finish it in time for BAKUC 2009. I really like looking at it everyday at home, though I have sold the MG IJ to a client already ( The IJ is out of place anyways ).

I hope to build a diorama bigger or as big as this one, one of these days ( years ) and hope to build a dio with a better layout but with the same amount or more amount of details in a single build. Anyways, hope you like this simple magazine type wallpaper of my " The Graveyard " diorama.

Bandai Model Kit World Cup 2010 in the Philippines will be starting tomorrow! November 5 will be the first submission date of the event. I and most of our MAC forum members will be submitting our entries on November 6 ( Saturday ), thus I will be covering the event on the second submission date already. I think there is nothing much to see on the 1st day anyways. hihi

I have a lousy camera though, but I will try my best to take photos of the event come Saturday. I would just like to say Goodluck to all the MAC member participants in this event! The only Bandai - Bankee sponsored event in the country and simply the biggest Gunpla annual contest in the world.

MG Sazabi WIP summary

 As Matt Mrozek told me at FichtenFoo forums, I kinda had an iffy start with this build. All I know is that I wanted this to be the fattest kit that I could make out of a MG Sazabi. I also have Z Luca's masterpiece as inspiration, thus I came up with the boob part, the huge crotch, huge rear skirts, huge front skirts and the Quebley shoulders.

Now let us see some really old photos of the early stages of this build... I constructed the boob part using the backpack of a 1/100 Gunner Zaku ( Gundam Seed ). I then scratch built a crotch and a huge plain front skirt using 2mm and 1mm pla plates...

MSN-04 Sazabi ver DC23

I have been working with this kit since around June but I only worked on it for roughly 3 months since then. Too much distractions since July thus I was only able to focused on working on this build for the last couple of months ( September & October ).

I have two inspirations for this build... the first one is Schnabelgun III by Zluca which has outstanding out of this world weathering. I am not capable of such topnotch weathering though, but I hope to reach that level one of these years.

My second inspiration is my own AC White Glint which was my first international ( client from the US ) commission work. I was really surprised to have pulled that build off coz it was my first time to do a good job on weathering a white mech.

As I've said before, the AC White Glint is the most impressive looking kit out of the box that I have built. The overall look of the mech with the Vanguard Overed Boost was outstanding. Thus, my MG Sazabi is simply a vain attempt to replicate the look of the White Glint.

This is going to be my entry in the up and coming Bandai World Cup 2010 for the Expert category. Although it will have a backpack and a diorama during the event. I obviously do not want the main kit to be revealed in not so good coverage photos come Saturday. Unless you have a really nice SLR, lighting in the event is just too lousy for the usual point and shoot camera ( like mine ). So, I present to you my standalone MG Sazabi ver DC23 ahead of time...

my MG Sazabi is done!!! THANK YOU! :D

I have finished putting decals and weathering of my MG Sazabi today! save some soot effects in a few areas the kit itself is done and ready for November 6! Unfortunately it rained a bit today, thus I was not able to paint the backpack. I will paint both backpack and 1/72 figures tomorrow definitely and try to finish a few days before the event.

Sorry though coz I won't be posting any more photos of my MG Sazabi. Hopefully even though I shared so much in the WIP of this build, There will still be an element of surprise once you guys have seen the whole mech. I will present my " the Gilgamesh project " very soon! thank you as always for the support!

On a side note, my deepest thanks to the 3 ( so far 2 are posted ) young modelers who joined our first SD competition. I will have to feature these guys within the week and decide after Bandai World Cup the ultimate winner who has the funniest and best SD kit. Goodluck guys!

1 week to go!

Exactly 1 week to go before Bandai World Cup! As I've said to Kriz / Rmahza... I have yet to paint the backpack of my MG Sazabi, add details to the diorama, paint ten 1/72 figures, and weather the whole kit. And I have to cram all those work in 1 week.

I started this project around June, but eventually ended up cramming ( not rushing ) to make it to Bandai World Cup, oh well... I have to take a break from blogging at home starting today, though I could still blog in the office until submission date ( November 6 ).

Goodluck to all the participants, I am pretty much sure a huge percentage of you guys are also cramming to make it to the deadline. hihi... So, until November 6 this blog is in semi stealth mode. Til' next post guys! :)

BANDAI Model Kit World Cup 2010 - Philippine Finals

Alas!!! The official news form Bankee ( Official Bandai distributor in the Philippines ) has released the flyers and rules for the BANDAI Model Kit World Cup ( BAKWC ) 2010 here in the Philippines. Practically the rules are the same with the previous BAKUCs but with minor alterations here and there.

Unfortunately I have neglected Gunpla for weeks now and I have been into Facebook games as of late. hehe... I would not be surprise if I won't make it this year. I do hope I get my Gunpla mojo back in time for this annual big stage competition.

I will be joining the Expert category for the first time this year, thus I am not that enthused at all at joining. I do wish that our Filipino modelers that are eligible to join the Junior and Open Category do well in the competition and I sincerely hope that the Philippines will again be represented well at Hong Kong Finals this year.

Afterall, our Junior category representative Eduardo Quirong is last year's BAKUC finals World Champion 2009!

Snow Hangar diorama primed

I just got home from the mall and got myself some paints and other supplies for this project. As you can see I ran out of grey primer earlier today when I was priming the dio ( I hate it whenever that happens ). Anyways, this is pretty much how the dio looks like minus 1 crane that I have yet to permanently glue and prime.

Next update is how the MG Sazabi looks like before priming. Anyways,  here are some photos of the snow hangar diorama in various angles...

BANDAI Model Kit World Cup 2010 - 3 weekends away!

3 weekends away and I think I am only 65% done. I feel the pressure now coz after checking my email I realized that Bankee ( official sponsor in the Philippines ) emailed me the rules and mechanics on joining the contest a couple of weeks ago.

I still have not registered though, will do some time this week. I also have to confirm with them if I am no longer eligible to join the Open category and should settle for joining the Expert cat starting this year. Anyways, the rules and mechanics of joining this annual biggie competition is on my sidebar in case you want  a quick review.

the GILGAMESH project

Three years after the Axis descent towards Earth where both Amuro and Char was KIA ( Killed in Action ), A small faction of Neo Zeon loyalists worked on an upgraded version of the Sazabi. They named the monster - Gilgamesh.

The Gilgamesh project was done in the remote regions of Northern Siberia on Earth and has been wreaking havoc on its test flights amongst the small Federation forces around the region. The Gilgamesh is simply called the abominable snowman by it's enemies.

MG Sazabi WIP - more crotch and front skirt details

I almost finished the front skirt of the MG Sazabi I have been working on. The crotch part is almost done save some really small pla plating on a few areas. I ran out of 2mm pla plates when I did the diorama, thus I only made use of 1mm pla plates for the front skirt giving it lesser depth than what I originally intended.

I added small 1mm and 2mm round pla rods for detailing the crotch part thus giving it a more interesting look. I also beefed up the front skirt with epoxy putty as seen on the sides and also gave it some internal skirt detailing.

I am not really proud of the front skirt internal details are there are lots of mis aligned details and such. However, I did not bother to correct them coz the inner side of the front skirt won't be that visible anyways. I will try to beef up the sides of the front skirts further with 1mm pla plates. Anyways, here are a few photos of my small progress so far...

Snow diorama painting test

After my kids has helped me with covering the hill side with newspaper mache... I then did some Tissue paper mache and applied my usual Sand+wood glue mixture. After letting the mache and the sand mixture dry overnight, I then tried to simulate snow with painting.

I do not want a white hill side, I want to show some rock formations on the side where snow would not build up. I used some cheap acrylics for the browns and painted the snow with Tamiya flat white enamel. I still have to apply talcum powder + glue OR talcum + future on the top of the hill to soften the rock ( pebble ) texture and simulate a thicker snow build up on top.

It looks ok but still needs a lot of touch up, but I think I could pull it off convincingly later on as I experiment with more snow and ice effects. I even plan to spray a mist coat of clear blue to the overall diorama once finished...I hope that will give a colder look to the dio.

HobbyLink Japan Gundam competition prize has arrived!

Woot!!! My MG V-Dash Gundam from the HobbyLink Japan-tomopop Gundam competition has arrived alas! Thanks a ton to both HLJ and tomopop for their competition. A new competition for all Gundam enthusiast all over the world!

I am pretty sure my fellow blogger and co-creator of MAC forums MatX also has his prize already. MatX won in the Best in Modification Category with his Ice Queen and I won in the Best in Diorama Category with my  " The Graveyard " ... It's practically a double win for both of us and a major win for our forums.
