My Don Suratos Minis and Mecha YOUTUBE Channel

I've been kinda focused on trying to grow my Youtube channel these days. I just finished writing a couple of magazine articles too. One for Fine Scale Modeler Magazine ( my 2nd ) and one for Fantasy Figures International Magazine. September was a crazy busy month and the following months look crazier.

My Youtube uploading was so sporadic the past year. I skip months of no uploads. But this year, I am more consistent and there are months that I am hyperactive. Like 3 to even 5 uploads a week since August. I was also very active back in March to April, to help promote my Maquina Painting book.

Youtube is very time consuming. Not really "hard work", as you like what you are doing. But it is very time consuming. Like 10x more time consuming in comparison to blogging. But much like blogging, Youtube is very fun and fulfilling, as you get to share your artworks to many people.

My daughter NICO, who is into gunpla these days is also very active at Youtube. She has her own channel and is about to reach 1,000 subs! Nico's most recent video upload is crazy good ( super bias Dad here ). She is now getting comfortable at recording her voice.

Here is the link to one of her videos 👉🏼 https://youtu.be/2gzwS5ehx6o

That's it! I just wanted to cross post a blog before I start my day. Just enjoy the hobby guys! Ignore gatekeepers and clowns. 🤪

New Video Tutorial Page at the Blog

Video Tutorial Page Photo

I just checked my really old TUTORIAL page. And I realized that Photobucket is asking me to pay  to display my banners properly. According to Photobucket, this is due to the bandwidth thing ( blog traffic ) that the tutorial page is getting.

I am too busy, too broke and too lazy to fix the banners now, so I just thought of creating a new page!

The new page will be my Video Tutorial Page

My old tutorial page has been getting a fairly good amount of traffic ( visits ) even during my inactivity from 2015 to last month. I am really happy that those old WIPS have been visited by a handful and hopefully have been informative or inspiring to some.

I am always fueled by the inspiration that I get from others and inspiration that I could give to others as well. This is the very reason I share my work in progresses too much. I even share my supposedly secret competition projects wayback.

I cannot thank all the people enough, who continued to visit this old blog, even during my inactivity.

This blog is slowly getting the normal traffic it was getting before. I am very happy to know that people ( specially serious Gunpla modelers and painters ) still love to read blogs. Blogs are not totally dead after all. I am very happy to have decided to keep this old blog going again.

Anyways, I have embedded my first 3 video tutorials in this post. I promise to do another and better ( with more close ups ) Armor trimming tutorial very soon.

I should be filling this new video tutorial page faster than usual, as I work on my Gunpla and miniature projects. I will also create shorter video tutorials ( but are still informative ) soon.

Old Gunpla friends know how fast I curn up not so well done Gunpla. LOL... But still I finish kits like hotcakes. Hahaha

Okay... I talked too much again. I hope you'll find the new page useful.

Thanks as always for dropping by! Until next update guys! Cheers!

Dspiae Chisels photo

Woot! I am sooo excited! I am waiting for my complete set of Dspiae Chisels to arrive ( in a few days ). I will be getting the whole set from Dspiae through HobbyMate

Much like the German made airbrush Harder & Steenbeck and Vallejo Mecha Colors, I will now exclusively use only Dspiae Chisels for all my future builds.

I will also put up a review and video tutorial on how to use Dspiae Chisels on my new Youtube channel

Stay tuned guys! This will be fun. Thanks as always for dropping by! Just enjoy the hobby!

Cheers!

RG Sazabi Armor Trimming verDC23 tutorial Part 1

RG Sazabi Armor Trimming verDC23 photo

I decided to create a Youtube video of this old Armor Trimming tutorial I did on a commissioned MG Zeta way back.

Now that I am focusing more on painting with Vallejo Mecha Colors, I will be doing only minor mods like armor trimming, scribing and holes. Not much pla plating in my future builds. I will still do simple vignettes, custom bases and dioramas tho.

The Armor Trimming technique I use is very simple. You just need a fresh new art knife to do the job. No fancy chisels whatsoever. With the proper technique of holding the art knife, and a simple process ( seen below ), anyone can spice up their kits with armor trimming.

Here is my Youtube video of this RG Sazabi Armor Trimming Part 1

I think the video will better show how this is done. Be very careful in handling the sharp art knife. The trick is to slice thin portions of the plastic, without forcing the art knife too much. Much like scribing, take your time ( sing a song ) and enjoy the process.

The armor trimming is perfect for any kit that has internals. RGs, MGs and PGs should look great with armor trimming. The simple mod will expose the highly detailed internals that are usually covered with armor.

This mod will also make you paint the internals nicely.

Armor trimming is easiest on white soft plastic. This is the reason I practiced on an old MG MK-ii, before working on the RG Sazabi. Colored plastic are a bit more brittle ( harder ) than white plastic. So be very careful specially when trimming colored Gunpla armor parts.

RG Sazabi Armor Trimming verDC23 photo

Just follow the "wedging" / trimming seen in the photo above. Wedge / trim per number and slowly cut / slice away the plastic in this process. Never force the art knife against the plastic. The art knife might slip. Number 1 or the first wedge is the most crucial. The succeeding numbers / cuts gets easier as you trim them.

Anyways, I hope the video demonstrates this modification technique better.

I hope you found this article and the video, helpful and informative.

Thanks as always for dropping by! Until next update guys!

Just enjoy the hobby! Cheers!

Vallejo Flow Improver EXPLAINED!

Vallejo Flow Improver EXPLAINED photo

First off, I apologize for the selfies. I am trying really hard to get comfortable in front of the camera ( both photos and videos ) for my new Youtube channel

Stand aside Chema Cabrero and Angel Giraldez... the new but old kid is here. LOL

Kidding aside, let's talk shop!

This blog article is part of my Vallejo Colors EXPLAINED series of posts.

Let's talk Acrylicos Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver.

INTRODUCTION

Gunpla modelers who are new ( and old ) to using the airbrush, swear by lacquers and alcohol based paints! They find it so easy to use with an airbrush. They find it easy to clean. They find these paints have great FLOW.

Boom! Flow is the keyword here.

The common misconception ( at least here in the very humid Philippines ) is that Vallejo colors ( or acrylics in general ) are harder to use than lacquers and alcohol based paints.

So why use acrylics?

I use acrylics coz I have 3 kids and I want my paints to be NON-TOXIC. I want my airbrush paints to be earth and body friendly. Cheaper non-water base paints, much more ( cheap, not the well established and regulated brands ) lacquer and alcohol based paints are toxic and can be really harmful to you, your family and our mother earttttttthhhhhhh!

Note that a few colors in the Game Color and Model Color line are not suitable for airbrushing. Also note that big brand lacquer and alcohol based paints are only mildly toxic as these are regulated.

Vallejo acrylics, even the Air variations ( Model Air, Game Air, Metal Color, Premium Color, Colorshift Color, Metal Color and Mecha Color ) dry really fast.

Vallejo paints are TRUE Water based paints. Unlike other water based paints that are actually alcohol based. You may thin and clean Vallejo paints with water... but I personally recommend thinning with mediums and thinners ( mediums for hand brushing  and thinner and flow improver for airbrushing ).

Some colors ( hues ), if not properly thinned, dry MID AIR. The mid air drying is normal, but... errr... not good. The acrylic is drying too fast. Thus, will give you a grainy ( sandy ) texture.

Enter... THE FLOW IMPROVER! ( insert evil laugh here )

Vallejo Flow Improver EXPLAINED photo

The Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver ( let's call it V FLOW ) improves the... hmmm... flow of the paints through the airbrush mechanism. Both the Vallejo airbrush thinner and the V Flow extends the drying time of the acrylic paints. Thus making them smoother to shoot through your airbrush.

The V FLOW, gives Vallejo paints a smoother feel when airbrushing.

The V Flow gives an almost "lacquer smooth feel" to airbrushing non-toxic Vallejo acrylics. You can use the V Flow with the Vallejo thinner, specially for thick colors like Blues and Greys.

V Flow for airbrushing is MAGIC! It is like mediums for hand painting. V Flow also helps in making the airbrush cleaning easier ( use Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner thinned 50:50 with water for cleaning your airbrush after painting ).

Vallejo Colors with V Flow is MAGIC! ( insert evil laugh here again ).

WHY USE FLOW IMPROVER, THINNER and MEDIUMS instead of water?

Again, you can thin Vallejo paints with water ( distilled water is best ), but if you thin too much...
You end up with a weaker paint. Water will thin Vallejo paints nicely. But over thinning with water will also dilute the binder.

The binder is the one that binds or holds the high quality pigments of Vallejo paints. They help in the adhesion of the paints to the surface.

So I personally recommend the V Flow and Vallejo Thinner ( and mediums for hand brushing ), as they do not weaken your paints. The Game Air, Metal Colors, Premium Colors and the Mecha Colors are super durable paints when fully cured and if thinned with Vallejo thinner and V Flow.

Note that curing of paints takes 1 day or a week ( for gloss ). They are almost instantly dry to the touch, but they are best handled after a week of curing

RATIOS

The standard Vallejo thinner is 1 part thinner to 3 parts paint ( 1:3 ).

The Vallejo Flow Improver is 1 part V Flow to 5 parts paiont ( 1:5 )

Super Note: Yellows and Reds thin differently than the thicker blues and greys. With practice, you can thin paints effectively just by looking and test spraying.

WHY CONTINUE USING CHEAP TOXIC PAINTS?

IMHO, I highly recommend you sell ( or better yet throw ) your harmful cheap lacquer and alcohol based paints ( NOT the well established lacquer and alcohol based paints ). By cheap I am referring to non-Gaia, non-Tamiya branded paints. The bigger brands are regulated by government health agencies, before approval to release in the market.

If you love yourself, you won't airbrush with cheap TOXIC paints. Airbrushing with cheap ( unregulated ) toxic lacquer and alcohol based paints is like inhaling second hand smoke from your airbrush.

Airbrush only with non-toxic paints ( or mildly toxic branded non water base alternatives ).

Personally, I airbrush only with VALLEJOS. Always Vallejo. I am experienced enough to know my medium. Experience will make painting acrylics ( of any brand ) more fun.

Use the V Flow and thinner to make the airbrushing of Vallejo acrylic paints smoother than ever before. Airbrushing non toxic Vallejo Paints is way better than painting with toxic paints.

Painting with cheap TOXIC paints is potentially very hazardous. Cheap toxic paints are not worth it.

CONCLUSION

I hope you found this wordy post useful and informative. I will be explaining ( further ) and using the V Flow and Mecha paints at my Youtube channel soon!

So please subscribe. :)

Rust and Chipping Book Review at Youtube

I just uploaded my first Youtube video with my voice over. This 9 minute video is a simple review of the Rust and chipping book by Acrylicos Vallejo

I actually shot a welcome video of myself, but I edited it out ( lol ). I am still not comfortable showing myself on video. I will eventually ( I think ). Also, I had to dub some parts of the video, as the roosters were sooo friggin noisy during the actual recording of the video yesterday.

I am pretty confident I could do a better video next time. I should also be more comfortable recording my voice ( and myself ) soon.

This video came out fine. Pretty happy but should get better.

Anyways, I hope you'll find my review informative ( or bearable at least ).

Thanks as always for dropping by! Until next post guys!

Cheers!

Ironman Statue Repaint at Youtube

I just uploaded the video photo gallery of my old commissioned Ironman statue ( fix figure toy ) at my new Youtube channel.

This is a fix figure toy / statue made of plastic rubber. I physically burned the figure and I painted and weathered this with Vallejo paints. A nice gloss Vallejo Premium gloss paint gave it this super glossy finish.

Also here is the link to a few posts regarding this Ironman Repaint

Thanks as always for dropping by! until next post guys!
