scoring 7 points at CMON for my first mini!

This was my first ever mini and it's scoring 7.1 at CoolMiniOrNot.com! Thank you for all the votes at CMON!

I posted a photo at CMON a few days back, knowing that my mini is not good enough though. However I know I should improve with a bit of practice, so putting up my first should be my benchmark to improve. I voted 3 points for my mini as that is how I see it... but getting 7 from the other members is pretty encouraging. Maybe they think I am a young dude and being my first mini, they do not want to put a harsh 3 points in their votes.

Hope to do better with my current mini project... I need to buy a couple of good sable brushes, a few inks and a few more bottles of Vallejos. This hobby is so much fun... less sanding... more painting!

Trollbloods Madrak Ironhide by DC23

I just finished my first ever metal miniature from Privateer Press. This is a variant figure of a Trollbloods Madrak Ironhide. Madrak I believe is the chieftain of the Trollbloods thus I think it was a bad decision to paint him first, as I should have practiced on cheaper or less important characters first.

I am pretty happy with how it came out though as it looks way better in person than my close up ( blurry ) macro shots.

It was super fun painting this figure as it is packed with sooooo much details! I also got lucky I found a small rock that complimented the pose of the figure and gave Madrak a more chieftain / leader look. I learned a lot in painting miniatures with this one and I need to get a few more painting supplies. Mixing of paint to get the right colors is a waste as you tend to mix a lot. So will get more Vallejo paints soon!

I also think the the black oil washes kinda blurred some details and gave it too much contrast... will need to buy Citadel inks or more Vallejo washes in different colors. One problem though, although I enjoyed this figure so much... I do not have another one to paint. Will need to buy a couple of cheap Trollbloods as my practice figs soon.

WIP - Trollbloods Madrak Ironhide - skin & armor

Took a few photos of my Madrak Ironhide as I needed to check if I am doing " okay " with the painting of the skin and the bronze armor parts. I thought I'd share my progress as well.

After seeing the the photos, I think the pink parts are too light colored and the armor parts needs more highlights. I am happy with that I managed to paint those tiny teeth and gums though and should be moving on to the other parts once I do a few touch ups.

Painting miniatures is not as easy as I thought it would... but I am having a blast and enjoying it so much. I should have not painted a very important character like Madrak for my first attempt... as I think I could improve more as I practice on more figures.

WIP - Trollbloods Madrak Ironhide - custom base painted

I just finished painting the custom base of my first ever Trollbloods figure, Madrak Ironhide ( variant ).

I hand painted the base with Vallejo Model Colors as usual and applied Windsor and Newton oil washes. The base looks a bit shiny but should look better once applied with its final dull / matte coat. I am happy with the look of my static grass and the contrast of the colors ( due to the washes ) but I feel I need to add a few more highlights to the rock base. Painting selected pebbles on the brownish ground part should also improve the look of the base.

This is why I love taking photos and sharing work in progress photos as you will see what you can improve on as you see the photos. Will do some touch ups to the base, seal it in gloss coat before moving on to painting my first ever metal miniature! Wish me luck guys!

WIP - Trollbloods Madrak Ironhide - custom base

I went to the one and only shop that sells Privateer Press figures the other day and got myself my first ever metal figure and my first ever Hordes Trollbloods!

I asked the guy ( could be the owner of the shop - thank you sir ) for a cheap well detailed Trollbloods figure as my first fig. He was accommodating enough to show me some, though he recommended this Madrak Ironhide variant figure as it is an important character.

I then realized that it is the leader of the Trollbloods clan and is the " most important " character amongst all the Trollbloods. The price is very good as it is even cheaper than the official price at Privateer Press.

Kinda hesitant to paint Madrak as he is a very important character but worked on the figure the moment I opened the blister pack. The metal fig came with a standard round plastic base and you have to glue both the arms to the body. It is really heavy as I am used to holding light plastic robots ( Gunpla ) for 4 years.

Knowing that Madrak is a very important character, I then thought of putting him on top of a cliff base. I was lazy to sculpt a cliff from epoxy putty so I just looked for a cliff-looking stone in front of our yard for many minutes. I think the stone that I used looks like a nice cliff. I am happy with the way it turned out so far as the position of Madrak on top of his base looks pretty well balance. Madrak is centered at all angles.

I am still hestant to paint this figure though but should be confident to paint the custom base already. Anyways here are some photos of my first ever Hordes metal miniature fig...
