Green Canvas Illustration Contest entries

Green Canvas Illustration Contest photo

Finally my Green Canvas entry was uploaded at Facebook!

After a couple of days of waiting, my entry amongst other new entries was posted at Power Mac Center's Facebook page yesterday.

I had a lot of fun working on this project as it was my first time after a long time drawing and entering in a poster making illustration contest. NO photos were allowed but I did have a few references specially for the texturing of my entry. Had a bit of headache staring at the computer monitor for long periods of time but I guess it was worth it.

Not expecting to win anything with my entry as I think colorful, vibrant stuffs always wins in these type of competitions. I always like it dark and epic... definitely not contest material stuff. A couple of office mates also joined the digital illustration contest and I have images of our entries below. Mine is the Ent looking Face as usual... Can't get over my LOTR influence in all my art. Anyways more entries in the link below...

Old Mother Nature illustration by DC23

Just wanted to share my first ever digital illustration since I do not know when.

This is part of a huge digital artwork I did for an online competition. Unlike my other wallpapers in this website, I did NOT use any photographs for this artwork. All you see here are strokes using a Wacom stylus pen in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I had a lot of fun working on this although I strained my eyes for around 8 hours and I always end up with a migraine after every painting session.

I must say I'd rather paint miniatures than do this everyday, due to the headache I get whenever I stay too long in front of the computer monitor. I am pretty happy with the result, although I feel that my drawing skills are a bit rusty as evident with the rough strokes in some parts of the digital drawing ( see the rough eyes ).

I will have to edit this post once the organizers accepts my entry...wish me luck guys. :)

Cosplay back in 1999 UP Lantern Parade

I saw this yesterday at Facebook, was tagged by Nemcy Cruz the owner of the photos. Great stuff! overly nostalgic photos with lots of familiar faces. Some I still know, a few I kinda forgot the names already. I highly doubt any friend after college would or could spot me in any of the photos. I was like a 130 pounder back then.

This is basically the annual Lantern Parade in the University of the Philippines ( UP - Diliman) every December. The Lantern Parade is a lantern making competition amongst all the Colleges in UP, a competition except for the College of Fine Arts. Our college participates annually as a hall of famer since who knows when as we always win in the said competition. Who could beat the College of Fine Arts in a Lantern Making competition anyways... College of wah??? ( hihi ).

However, this is the exact year when the College of Fine Arts cannot supply materials ( Bamboo sticks, paper and such ) due to a financial thingee. As I remember it back in December 1999, the students were told to shoulder all the materials needed to participate in the event and to ease the burden of spending too much on materials, the College told us not to do lanterns but just participate by doing costumes which is obviously a lot cheaper.

My costume back then was not the Gundam... mine was a bit stupid, but we had a blast back then. 11 years after the event, all these images were blurred - slowly fading memories already. Well,  until I saw these old pictures from Nemcy Cruz. Ahhhh, memoirs of my carefree college years in the University of the Philippines, Fine Arts...

original caricature avatar at last!

Alas! I was able to create a character for my blog! I did this in the office using Adobe Illustrator CS5 and added the background in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I am not that comfortable in Illustrator, though I know the basic stuffs to be able to pull off something like this. I love the new features of the AI CS5 though... great stuff!

I have used a lot of avatars, my current one is the Nightmare before Christmas skull head which I really like coz I love skulls! I also liked my Lil' Robert  ( want a link ? ) character, though it is too infamous to use now. So I am really happy I came up with a simple original character that I could use as my avatar.

The character pretty much sums up how people in general knows me. I am a Filipino so I used some sandals and a Filipino flag. I have around 3 MAC shirts and a couple of DC23 shirts, so I used it in the character as well. I used my Kampfer as helmet coz I think people who does not know me might recognize the yellow Kampfer. And I made the character with its tongue out... well I just like it saying " BELAT " to others. hehe

Anyways, thanks for dropping by! Til' next post! :)

College of Fine Arts -University of the Philippines

I just learned and visited today the website of my alma mater, College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines. The site brought back lots of memories during my 5 year tenure in those colorful walls...I really can't express the feeling in words much. More than the art lessons, photography lessons and advertising lessons...it is the experience and
the culture that is very loose and the creative environment that guided you after college.

The professors are way cool and you get to experience to paint / draw outdoors, the countless hours of constructing huge floats for the Christmas parade, Really cool concerts with
