I Draw and Paint Monsters and Robots for a Living

I Draw and Paint Monsters and Robots for a Living photo

People who follow me or been friends with me since I started this blog back in 2009, might be surprised a bit as I am coming back to Gunpla and Miniature painting again.

I previously tried to come back to the hobby a couple of times before ( 2012 and 2015 ), but ended up focusing on my career ( employed artist in 2012, freelance illustrator in 2016 ).

I was focused in being a professional illustrator ( I do not use the term artist, as anything you do with a computer is art these days ).

I professionally do both digital illustrations and traditional ink art and watercolors on paper. In fact, I became the first Filipino commissioned by Paramount Pictures to do an alternate poster for the movie, Pet Sematary this year

I have illustrated more than 50 published children's books in less than 3 years already. I have also drawn a ton of ink illustrations from Star Wars, Wargaming characters to Gundam. 90% ( maybe 98% ) of my illustration clients are from abroad tho. My wife ships traditional art, rolled inside a plastic tube through our local post office. Here is the link to my ART portfolio

Drawing monsters and robots at home, for a living is so fulfilling, You do not have a ( insert expletives here ) boss after all. It won't get you rich like crazy, but you will have enough to put 3 kids to school and slowly ( really slowly ) build a house / home studio - Blue Brick,  at the same time.

FAST FORWARD

I'm really back as a Gunpla, Miniature Painter, Scale Modeler this time!

NO, I do not think I will be joining GBWC ever again ( I am conflicted ). I used to join Bandai Gunpla competitions in 2008 to 2010.

My Kampfer luckily won as World Champion in Hong Kong back in 2008 ( it's not even in the Bandai site anymore ) I met so many awesome people there. Back in 2010, Bandai created the expert category for multi time champions.

I think mostly to prevent us from joining the Open category. My Gilgamesh Project won as Expert Champion. There are only 3 multi champion participants including me, in the expert category tho. A ton of LOL!

The old "Expert Category" of Bandai's competition back then, is one of the reason I stopped doing Gunpla. I shifted a bit to painting miniatures. Miniatures take less prep work, but are harder to paint. But it was also fun stuff!

I AM REALLY BACK THIS TIME

I am really back this time. Promise. LOL

I am actually waiting for a shipping of my model kits ( from the Gunpla Distributor from Singapore ).  Yes I do not even get my kits locally these days ( lol ). I am so excited, but afraid of the custom taxes at the same time. haha

I will also have a ton of personal Gunpla and Miniature projects. I like to do some restoration work of my older dioramas and vignettes and do some quick painting of smaller kits and minis.

I am expecting a whole year's ( 2020 ) amount of kits. Not sure if they are sending the whole lot I listed tho. But never the less, I am sooo excited!

I have my Harder & SteenBeck airbrush to shoot with, I have my Vallejos to paint with, I have tools from HobbyMate and miniatures from Neutral Grounds to hand paint in the coming year!

This is going to be so much fun!

Join me as I try to build up my new Youtube channel, posts a ton in my Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Again, this semi transition back to the hobby should be a ton of fun!

Thanks as always for dropping by! Until next update guys! Just enjoy the hobby!

Cheers!

Acrylicos Vallejo Colors EXPLAINED

Why So Many Vallejo Colors EXPLAINED photo

Once again, pardon for all the iPad Pro selfies, as I really need to get comfortable in front of the camera for my new Youtube channel. At some point I will stop apologizing. LOL

Let's talk shop again!

This blog article is part of my Vallejo Colors EXPLAINED series of posts.

I had a nice long chat with a long time Gunpla modeler friend, now a Vinyl sculptor and painter ( Wuji ) a few nights ago. And we talked a ton regarding Vallejo paints...

PAINTS

I paint and draw monsters and robots for a living. I paint acrylics on canvases, and draw inks and watercolors on paper.

I only use Vallejos ( except for a handful of Golden acrylic paints ). I only use quality paints on my paintings and illustrations. Canvas and paper are dirt cheap, but quality paints get expensive fast.

Models and toys are NOT cheap.

So quality paints are more important to me when it comes to painting Gunpla and action figures. I also like my paints non-toxic as I have 3 kids ( since 2007 ).

Paints are not cheap, they are actually investments. Start investing on quality paints.

WHY SO MANY VALLEJOS!

I have been using Vallejos since 2001 ( could be earlier ). I used to paint my Lord of the Rings action figure collection with Vallejo Model Color and Washes. I like my toys dirty and grimy like in the movies.

I have more than 500k php worth of Lord of the Rings toys. I almost painted ( weathered ) all of them. My 10 inch Sauron figure is the shiniest in the world. lol

Acrylicos Vallejo is a crazy company.

They invest so much time and money in developing their paints. This crazy goal of trying to give us the best quality and performing paints for specific painting tasks, led to a wide range of colors!

I think Vallejo have the widest range of colors for painting, drawing, scale models ( hobby ), miniatures and now Gunpla and action figures.

Non-artists but are scale modelers have a good experience with lacquers and hobby acrylics. A handful like me, have experience with the art / painting range ( Vallejo Acrylic Studio ) as well.

Acrylics ( true water based acrylics ) for painting and for scale models are different from each other.

However, all water based acrylics ( even the more expensive brands ) have different consistency. I am not sure as I am not a scientist, but this varying viscosity / consistency or even opacity, depends on the pigments.

Experienced acrylic painters and scale modelers know their acrylics tho. Different colors are handled differently, different colors are thinned differently. Knowing and mastery of your medium is part of being a true "artist" anyways. I am not implying I am a great artist. I am just stating that I am an artist. :)

Knowing these individual color properties, both in painting on canvas and on scale models, will actually help you produce diverse results.

In time, learning how to paint acrylics is worth it. They are ( mostly ) non-toxic after all.

I will try to briefly explain all the different Vallejo colors that I have. I have a ton of Vallejo paints. I have the complete range of Vallejo Game Air, Vallejo Game Color, Vallejo Metal Colors, Color Shift, and Vallejo Mecha Colors.

I also have a lot of Model colors, Model Air colors, All the pigments, all the washes, inks, texture paints and all of the auxiliary paints. I think I have enough experience with all these paints. lol

VALLEJO MODEL COLOR

The Vallejo Model Color are made for scale models ( tanks, planes, ships and 1/35 figures ). They have the widest range of hobby colors ( Vallejo Air included ) on earth!

There are 210 ( I think ) Vallejo Model Color paints. They have also the most number of paint sets ( rust set, figure painting set and camo sets ). Since they were designed for army scale models, they have the widest range of browns, earth and grey colors. Also a crazy amount of greens.

VALLEJO MODEL AIR COLOR

The Vallejo Model Air is the airbrush color range / version of Vallejo Model Color. They have a total of 348 colors in this airbrush range.

Again a crazy amount of earth, grey and green colors. The pigments used for these paints are "atomically" smaller than Vallejo Model Colors. The paints in this range are also airbrush friendly. A few colors in the Model Color range are a bit toxic ( not as toxic as lacquers of course ).

Thus Vallejo does not recommend thinning and using the Model Colors for airbrush use. Both the Model Colors and Model Air Colors are the preferred paints of scale modelers like Chema Cabrero and others.

VALLEJO GAME COLOR

The Vallejo Game color were designed for table top miniatures. They can withstand the usual handling ( playing ) of these miniatures. I have around 40 of these paints.

There are a total of 207 colors in the Vallejo Game Color range. These are actually a bit more vibrant than the Model color paint range. Much like the Model Colors, Game Colors were designed for hand painting.

There are a ton of Game Color paint sets too. Some ( most ) were designed by Angel Giraldez.

Much like Vallejo Model Color, these Game Colors are not designed for airbrushing. A few are even mildly toxic for airbrushing. See Vallejo's official website for the list of mildly toxic colors.

VALLEJO GAME AIR COLOR

I have the complete Vallejo Game Air Color ( 76 ) and I love them. The colors are vibrant and the viscosity is actually great for hand painting. I still add a drop of medium ( usually matte medium ) and keep my paint brush wet ( distilled water ) during hand painting.

I used my Vallejo Game Air in airbrushing and hand painting my miniatures. I also used them for my Gunpla way back. Until I discovered Vallejo Premium.

The Vallejo game air are also sold in sets ( designed by Angel Giraldez ).

I still thin this with Vallejo thinner and V Flow when using them for airbrush. Usually 1:1:8 ratio of thinner, V Flow and paint. Lighter colors ( less opaque ) are thinned less. All the Vallejo Game Air Colors are safe for use with the airbrush.

VALLEJO METAL COLOR

I have the complete range of Vallejo Metal Colors ( 27 including the Metal Varnish and Black Primer ). These are awesome metallic paints that are also for airbrush. The pigments are so smooth. They are like real metal. This range needs more yellow / brown variant tho. They only have Copper and Gold.

The Vallejo Metal Colors were formulated with aluminum pigments in a water based formula. These metallic colors are the best water base metallic paints in the market in my humble opinion. I have yet to intensively try the metallic colors of the Vallejo Mecha Colors tho.

VALLEJO PREMIUM

This is my fave until the Vallejo Mecha Colors for Gunpla came out of the market. The Vallejo Premium paints come in bigger 60ml bottles. I have exactly 10 of these colors. I use them for Gunpla. These paints were formulated to adhere to any kinds of surface such as polyethylene, fiberglass, polycarbonate, metal and lexan.

I have primarily use this for metal miniatures ( primer ) and Gunpla. These are super strong polyurethane paints. I highly recommend a Vallejo Premium Urethane gloss varnish before any Vallejo Matte varnishes.

These paints are used for motorcycle helmets and surfboards.

VALLEJO MECHA COLOR

I have the complete set of Vallejo Mecha Color Paints. Albeit I haven't used every color, I actually tested the early formulation of these paints.

I think these are as strong or almost ( I am not sure ) as the Vallejo Premium Colors. Albeit Vallejo Mecha Color were formulated to withstand play and handling of model kits like Gunpla. I think these paints are also perfect for action figures.

We will know in time.

As I've said in my previous Vallejo Explained posts, I will be exclusively using these Vallejo Mecha Color paints in all my future Gunpla builds and toy repaints.

And I will pe uploading videos of all my painting process in my new Youtube channel

LIQUID GOLD, TEXTURE PAINTS, WASHES, INKS, WEATHERING EFFECTS

I have the Liquid gold paints which are super smooth and metallic looking paints ( Gold, Silver and  Bronze ). However they are alcohol based and you need a different set of paint brushes for these paints.

I have all the big texture paints and have been using them on all my diorama builds. I personally use palette knives and wooden sticks in applying them, as they easily ruin paint brushes. You need to let these paints for a good few hours ( or a day for the still water )before applying second coats.

The Weathering Effects paints are super Awesome, Some are gloss to mimic real life wet oil and such. Some are matte like the older washes. Much like the washes, these are easier to control than the inks. The super high pigments in the inks are a bit too bold for some weathering effects. I have a complete set of Washes and Inks. I only have a few Weathering effects paints.

The Vallejo Mecha Color set came with 11 Weathering Effects paints... and I am super excited to use them soon!

NAVY COLOR, AFV COLOR SERIES, AIR WAR COLOR SERIES and PANZER ACES

I only have a handful of these paints. They are similar ( I think ) to the Model Air Colors. However, I have little experience in using them, and I have yet to paint a model tank or plane. Chema Cabrero and other experience scale modeler masters should have all these paints and they use these extensively for all their builds ( envious me ).

THAT'S IT!

It's simple, you buy them all! Hahahaha

Seriously, buy the set depending on what you paint.

Or if you do Gunpla ( use Mecha Colors ), which is prone to a bit more wear and tear than miniatures and scale models, but you like the colors from the other series, I suggest you use Premium or Mecha Color Primers, then finish with Premium or Mecha Color Varnishes.

Again, let the paints cure for a week after the Urethane ( Premium ) or Mecha Color gloss varnish, then spray Mecha Color matte ( or satin varnish ), then let cure for another week before handling.

Personally I would recommend Mecha Colors and Premium Colors from Primer to varnish for Gunpla. I understand that the colors are limited as of now tho. Let's hope they expand the color choices soon. wink wink.

As always, thanks a ton for dropping by! Until next update guys!

Again, do not forget to subscribe to my new Youtube channel. And join my humble journey in painting with Mecha Colors in my future Gunpla and Toy Repaints!

Thanks! Just enjoy the Hobby!

Cheers!

Vallejo Mecha Color EXPLAINED

Vallejo Mecha Color EXPLAINED photo

As usual, pardon for the selfies as I desperately try to get comfortable in front of the camera, for my new YouTube channel

Let's talk shop again!

Let's talk Vallejo Mecha Colors

I just received my complete set of the Vallejo Mecha Colors last week. So I haven't used and tested all of the paints that came in the 80 color set. I do not claim I know and I am familiar with all of the colors, thus I appreciate the tips on how to use them, sent to me at Facebook.

This blog article is part of my Vallejo Colors EXPLAINED series of posts.

TESTING

The Vallejo Mecha Colors were in development since 6 ( probably longer ) years ago. Yours truly ( DC23 ), was sent a handful of Mecha colors 6 years ago.

Yes! 6 years ago. I was not finishing Gunpla projects back then, but was testing some paints in development.

The first batch of paints were labeled Mecha Airbrush Color ( seen in the photo below ). I received a handful. Black, White, Red, Yellow, Blue. I tested them on Gunpla scrap parts and some miniatures ( WarmaHordes ).

The second batch of paints, labeled Mecha Color Free Sample, were sent around 5 or 4 years ago. I got Black, White, Red, Blue, Yellow, Off White and Gunmetal. I also tested them on scrap Gunpla parts and more miniatures.

I tested both batches with my Harder & Steenbeck airbrush and also tested them in hand painting.

Both batches were great!

I then tested the durability and adherence to the surface after letting them cure for a week. The first batch were roughly as strong as the Game Air range and the second batch were as strong as the Vallejo Premium range. Meaning the second batch were stronger.

Vallejo claims these paints are different from the Vallejo Premium range tho.

FYI, The Vallejo Premium range was my choice of colors for Gunpla, back when theese Mecha Colors were still under development.

The Vallejo Premium range are airbrush paints used for Motorcycle Helmet art. They are made super strong. The Vallejo Premium Gloss Varnish is super crazy strong.

MORE TESTING

Now that I have the complete range of the Mecha Colors. ( As much as I love the Vallejo Premium range and Metal Colors ) I will be using these paints exclusively in all my future builds. These Mecha Colors are made for airbrush ( like the Model Air and Game Air ). but they are super easy to use to hand paint.

Vallejo claims that these paints have super strong adherence to the surface ( even without primer ).

Hmmm... "even without primer" intrigues me a lot!

I have been using Vallejo ( albeit Model Color ) on my Lord of the Rings action figures since 2001. Albeit I do not play with them after painting.

If the "even without primer" is true. I will use these paints on an unpainted Gunpla and some action figures.

VALLEJO MECHA COLOR

The Vallejo Mecha Colors are made to use for airbrushing ( I exclusively use Harder & Steenbeck airbrush ). Vallejo claims you can airbrush them directly from the bottle. I personally add Vallejo thinner, and a drop of Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver for airbrushing.

Depending on the colors, because the viscosity of water based acrylics ( in general ) are different from color to color. I mix a drop of thinner, a drop of V Flow ( Flow Improver ) and 8 drops of Mecha Color for airbrushing.

Note that yellows and reds are thinner to begin with ( so use even less thinner and V Flow ).

The high pigment count will ensure good coverage, even if you thin a bit too much. Too much thinning, much like other kinds of paints might run tho.

Experience with airbrushing non-toxic acrylics will help you know proper mixing, even by looking or mixing the paints, you'll know a good airbrush mix.

The Vallejo Mecha Colors are awesome for hand painting. Just a few drops of mediums and a constantly wet brush and you are good to go. I only use distilled water when wetting my paint brushes.

I will upload videos of all my future builds at my Youtube channel, to further demonstrate on how to use these paints soon.

Join me as we play and use these Vallejo Mecha Colors for Gunpla, Mecha and even on Action Figures ( toys ), both here at my blog and my YouTube channel.

Should be fun!

As always, Thanks a ton for dropping by! Until next update guys!

Just Enjoy the Hobby!

Cheers!

Vallejo Flow Improver EXPLAINED!

Vallejo Flow Improver EXPLAINED photo

First off, I apologize for the selfies. I am trying really hard to get comfortable in front of the camera ( both photos and videos ) for my new Youtube channel

Stand aside Chema Cabrero and Angel Giraldez... the new but old kid is here. LOL

Kidding aside, let's talk shop!

This blog article is part of my Vallejo Colors EXPLAINED series of posts.

Let's talk Acrylicos Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver.

INTRODUCTION

Gunpla modelers who are new ( and old ) to using the airbrush, swear by lacquers and alcohol based paints! They find it so easy to use with an airbrush. They find it easy to clean. They find these paints have great FLOW.

Boom! Flow is the keyword here.

The common misconception ( at least here in the very humid Philippines ) is that Vallejo colors ( or acrylics in general ) are harder to use than lacquers and alcohol based paints.

So why use acrylics?

I use acrylics coz I have 3 kids and I want my paints to be NON-TOXIC. I want my airbrush paints to be earth and body friendly. Cheaper non-water base paints, much more ( cheap, not the well established and regulated brands ) lacquer and alcohol based paints are toxic and can be really harmful to you, your family and our mother earttttttthhhhhhh!

Note that a few colors in the Game Color and Model Color line are not suitable for airbrushing. Also note that big brand lacquer and alcohol based paints are only mildly toxic as these are regulated.

Vallejo acrylics, even the Air variations ( Model Air, Game Air, Metal Color, Premium Color, Colorshift Color, Metal Color and Mecha Color ) dry really fast.

Vallejo paints are TRUE Water based paints. Unlike other water based paints that are actually alcohol based. You may thin and clean Vallejo paints with water... but I personally recommend thinning with mediums and thinners ( mediums for hand brushing  and thinner and flow improver for airbrushing ).

Some colors ( hues ), if not properly thinned, dry MID AIR. The mid air drying is normal, but... errr... not good. The acrylic is drying too fast. Thus, will give you a grainy ( sandy ) texture.

Enter... THE FLOW IMPROVER! ( insert evil laugh here )

Vallejo Flow Improver EXPLAINED photo

The Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver ( let's call it V FLOW ) improves the... hmmm... flow of the paints through the airbrush mechanism. Both the Vallejo airbrush thinner and the V Flow extends the drying time of the acrylic paints. Thus making them smoother to shoot through your airbrush.

The V FLOW, gives Vallejo paints a smoother feel when airbrushing.

The V Flow gives an almost "lacquer smooth feel" to airbrushing non-toxic Vallejo acrylics. You can use the V Flow with the Vallejo thinner, specially for thick colors like Blues and Greys.

V Flow for airbrushing is MAGIC! It is like mediums for hand painting. V Flow also helps in making the airbrush cleaning easier ( use Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner thinned 50:50 with water for cleaning your airbrush after painting ).

Vallejo Colors with V Flow is MAGIC! ( insert evil laugh here again ).

WHY USE FLOW IMPROVER, THINNER and MEDIUMS instead of water?

Again, you can thin Vallejo paints with water ( distilled water is best ), but if you thin too much...
You end up with a weaker paint. Water will thin Vallejo paints nicely. But over thinning with water will also dilute the binder.

The binder is the one that binds or holds the high quality pigments of Vallejo paints. They help in the adhesion of the paints to the surface.

So I personally recommend the V Flow and Vallejo Thinner ( and mediums for hand brushing ), as they do not weaken your paints. The Game Air, Metal Colors, Premium Colors and the Mecha Colors are super durable paints when fully cured and if thinned with Vallejo thinner and V Flow.

Note that curing of paints takes 1 day or a week ( for gloss ). They are almost instantly dry to the touch, but they are best handled after a week of curing

RATIOS

The standard Vallejo thinner is 1 part thinner to 3 parts paint ( 1:3 ).

The Vallejo Flow Improver is 1 part V Flow to 5 parts paiont ( 1:5 )

Super Note: Yellows and Reds thin differently than the thicker blues and greys. With practice, you can thin paints effectively just by looking and test spraying.

WHY CONTINUE USING CHEAP TOXIC PAINTS?

IMHO, I highly recommend you sell ( or better yet throw ) your harmful cheap lacquer and alcohol based paints ( NOT the well established lacquer and alcohol based paints ). By cheap I am referring to non-Gaia, non-Tamiya branded paints. The bigger brands are regulated by government health agencies, before approval to release in the market.

If you love yourself, you won't airbrush with cheap TOXIC paints. Airbrushing with cheap ( unregulated ) toxic lacquer and alcohol based paints is like inhaling second hand smoke from your airbrush.

Airbrush only with non-toxic paints ( or mildly toxic branded non water base alternatives ).

Personally, I airbrush only with VALLEJOS. Always Vallejo. I am experienced enough to know my medium. Experience will make painting acrylics ( of any brand ) more fun.

Use the V Flow and thinner to make the airbrushing of Vallejo acrylic paints smoother than ever before. Airbrushing non toxic Vallejo Paints is way better than painting with toxic paints.

Painting with cheap TOXIC paints is potentially very hazardous. Cheap toxic paints are not worth it.

CONCLUSION

I hope you found this wordy post useful and informative. I will be explaining ( further ) and using the V Flow and Mecha paints at my Youtube channel soon!

So please subscribe. :)

Just Some DC23 logo Variations

DC23 logo variations photo

I did some DC23 logo variations to start my day ( woke up later than usual ). I am starting to confuse our different social media accounts and I wanted to unify all the accounts at the same time. So voila! Same logo in different variants.

These are just quick and rough variants. I did not do them in Ai or something. No plans ( as of this writing ) of printing them on shirts or whatever. So these will do. They look good as profile pic / avatars. I am still getting used to them at the moment.

I used the logo with the youtube icon for all the DC23_mecharts accounts ( IG, Twitter and Facebook ). Albeit DC23_mecharts at Twitter and the Fb page is now named Don Suratos ART. I want to promote my new Youtube channel with the logo. I am still building up the channel tho. Building up your channel is hard work, but is so fun.

The DC23 logo with the rising sun background is for our DC23 clothing brand. Our first set of 3 designs are Samurai / Gundam inspired. Also I love anything Japanese ( obviously ).

DC23 logo variations photo

DC23 logo variations photo

We are shipping another batch of DC23 clothing custom shirts today. We really never thought these custom shirts will sell this well. I personally hand drawn the shirt designs / illustrations with a Japanese brush on paper. Scanned it and had my art printed on shirts. Awesome stuff!

There are only TWO more extra large Sazabi inspired shirts. And a handful of the Zaku and RX inspired shirts. We might re-print these Samurai line again. People like them. Thank You!

That's it! Thanks a ton as always for dropping by! Until next update guys!

Cheers!

Ironman Statue Repaint at Youtube

I just uploaded the video photo gallery of my old commissioned Ironman statue ( fix figure toy ) at my new Youtube channel.

This is a fix figure toy / statue made of plastic rubber. I physically burned the figure and I painted and weathered this with Vallejo paints. A nice gloss Vallejo Premium gloss paint gave it this super glossy finish.

Also here is the link to a few posts regarding this Ironman Repaint
