Diorama water effects tutorial

Hello guys, I reconstructed a simple tutorial about how I did the water effects in my " The Graveyard " diorama...coz a few people asked me about it. However, the first couple of pics were never in my original WIP thread in ZeroGunz, coz it was kinda a secret at that time. Here I will show how I completely made the water effects in my diorama.

FIRST, I constructed the base out of plywood and glued a blue plastic folder over the water area...

then I used a wood glue to create the wavy texture that will serve as the base for the silicone...

I then applied the glue to create the texture...

I don't have a photo of the wood glue when it hardened but it took around 8 hours to fully cure...it was solid and hard when cured...I then painted it with cheap green acrylic ( reeves )...

and painted it with a mixture of blue and a drop of brown to make it look deeper...the green is ok around the edges of the river...and the  Force Impulse Gundam being sawed and glued to the base should be applied with a weathering with Tamiya weathering master...

Then lastly I applied the silicone gel..I think this is used to seal aquariums and windows...silicone dries pretty fast but cures totally after 36 hours...but it feels dry already after 30 minutes. I applied it with my fingers to create the splashing effects...

Then, after an hour...I gave the silicone an acrylic wash of clear green, the intention was to add depth and color to the water effect but the acrylic paint did not adhere well to the silicone surface...so I suggest you skip this step if you are in a hurry. hehe. Anyways, this is how it looks like...

See how the surface repels the acrylic paint...

The acrylic paint dried nevertheless after roughly an hour and it looks ok...

LASTLY, after all the scratch built pieces where in place ( over the water part ) and the groundwork around the water was painted further with enamel washes ...I applied a nice thick layer of silicone gel to glue the scaffoldings in place and to give the water part more depth. You can actually see the clear green wash in the final pics...so I guess it did add some depth and color to the water effect. Here are a few pics...

Brief and informative, just the way I like it.

You can thin the silicone sealant with lighter fluid. It'll make is smoother and easeier to brush. This is also a way so you can add some pigment and actually paint with the sealant. I recommend using enamel to tint the silicon, any oil based pigments are fine too. I thought this tip could overcome the acrylic problem you mention on your tutorial.

Keep up the great work!

this is the flame effects i was talking about in my last message. It did not turn out the way i had wanted. I think it would look better as red and gold flames instead of blue and white. If you wouldnt mind i posted a picture of the finished gundam with the flames. I would love your input on it and ways to improve the flames if you have time. Thanks!

Very NICE flame effects actually! The blue flame blended very well with the color scheme of the kit. A bit more silicone layers should add more texture to the flame I think. Nevertheless it looks good! You could join our MAC Forums bro if you'd like more input, here is the link - http://boards.themacforums.com/index/

Hi DC23, I am new in modelling. I bought a Tamiya weathering master like above. Just would like to know if the normal texture of Tamiya weathering master is dry (not oily)? I'm having a hard time doing weathering due to this issue, I already tried to return the weathering master to Tamiya Store in Glorrietta and they said that this is normal.  I'm not sure on this because the other one color (gun metal) is quite oily and the color I can use it properly, I had a feeling that I bought an old stock. I just would like to know the real texture so I know already what its like the next time I buy (maybe in other store). Thanks in advance.

Yes it is a bit oily, just a bit. It has a sort of biinder unlike the usual chalk pastels. The texture actually makes it adhere to the surface better than pigments and pastels. :)
